The NPD Group is announcing that Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is the video game which has managed to lead video game sales on the United States market for the month of December 2014, with the title from developer Sledgehammer Games and publisher Activision also managing to lead the industry for the entirety of the year.

The problem is that, despite its very good performance, the game leads a sector which is showing a decline when compared to the same period of 2013, with its overall sales value declining by 2 percent to reach 1.25 billion dollars (960 million Euro).

Grand Theft Auto V has managed to get second place for the month of December as it continues to move a lot of copies on the Xbox One and the PlayStation 3.

The final place on the podium belongs to Madden NFL 15 from EA Sports, which benefits from the fact that it has no real rival and from the interest in the playoff season.

The rest of the video game top ten is made up of: Super Smash Bros. from Nintendo, NBA 2K15 from 2K Games, Minecraft from Mojang, Far Cry 4 from Ubisoft, Just Dance from the same company, Destiny from Activision, and FIFA 15 from Electronic Arts.

When all 12 months of 2014 are taken into account, the top three titles in the United States are: Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Madden NFL 15, and Destiny.

Publishers need to drive up sales in 2015

Despite the success of the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, video games linked to them have not managed to deliver significantly more sales than during the last console cycle.

Liam Callahan, an analyst for the NPD Group, is quoted by GamesIndustry.biz as saying that “With the growth in install bases across eighth generation consoles, software this December versus last December grew by 70 percent with each console posting strong double digit growth. Across 2014, eighth generation console software sales rose by $1.7 billion.”

In January, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will probably continue to rule the charts as the community gets access to the new Havoc downloadable content, which adds four maps and the Exo Zombies mode.

The shooter will probably only be challenged when bigger titles start arriving during March.
