A new update has been released for Calibre

Calibre, a complete application to edit, view, and convert eBook files, has received its last update this year and the developer chose to add a number of fixes and other various improvements.

Most of the Calibre releases usually bring some sort of features or support for new devices, but it looks like the 2.14 version is not the typical release. It's mostly about various minor fixes and it's hard to find something that really stands out.

On the other hand, Calibre is a very complex application, so there is always something to correct or to fix. In any case, if you are using Calibre on a regular basis, this is a very good time to upgrade. The procedure is rather simple and it shouldn't take too long.

Calibre 2.14 is not a major upgrade

One of the issues that hasn't been fixed yet or improved is the updated process, which is completely missing. Unless you installed the application from a repository, which would make the upgrade a simple task, users will need to install the application each time. As new versions are released almost on a weekly basis, you might understand why it's an annoyance.

"calibre can convert from a huge number of formats to a huge number of formats. It supports all the major e-book formats. The conversion engine has lots of powerful features. It can rescale all font sizes, ensuring the output e-book is readable no matter what font sizes the input document uses. It can automatically detect/create book structure, like chapters and Table of Contents. It can insert the book metadata into a 'Book Jacket' at the start of the book," reads the official website.

The developer has also explained that the metadata review dialog has been revamped and that the application now "automatically inserts series number when selecting a series from the completion dropdown. Also if the user does not specify a series number, use 1 as the default, instead of not setting the series."

The fixes implemented in Calibre 2.13 are quite consistent. For example, a number of regressions have been corrected, deleting a book from the library is now done properly, the FB2 files produced by convertonlinefree.com are now opened correctly, and a couple of news sources have been added.

More details about this latest release can be found on the official website. You can also download the Calibre 2.14 source package from Softpedia, if you want to compile it yourself. We also have a comprehensive review of Calibre.
