Calculate Linux, an optimized distribution designed for rapid deployment in corporate environments that's based on the Gentoo project and includes numerous pre-configured functions, has been upgraded to version 14.12 and is now available for download.

The Calculate Linux distribution is actually made up of quite a few different flavors which are aimed at different users, with very different hardware configurations.

It's difficult to maintain a single quality edition of a Linux distro, so you can only imagine just how much effort is needed to provide support for six editions. And they don't differ just in terms of the desktop environment.

The operating system is based on Gentoo and that is not exactly a popular solution for a base. It's true that it's a very good Linux system to have, but you can count the number of distros based on Gentoo on one hand. The fact that Calculate Linux uses Gentoo is just another thing to admire.

Calculate Linux 14.12 is more of a maintenance update

The main 14.x branch of Calculate Linux was released back in September, and the developers have been quick to release a number of important fixes and various changes. If you already have this distro installed, it would be a great idea to upgrade as soon as possible, if you haven't done it already.

"Calculate Linux Desktop (CLD) is a multifunctional desktop that can handle anything you need for your business. CLD is a versatile replacement for Windows Workstation and provides an advanced set of applications, including LibreOffice, development tools, graphics and sound editors."

"We are happy to announce the release of Calculate Linux 14.12. Calculate Linux Desktop, featuring either the KDE (CLD) or the XFCE (CLDX) environment, Calculate Directory Server (CDS), Calculate Media Center (CMC), Calculate Linux Scratch (CLS), Calculate Scratch Server (CSS) are all available for download," reads the official website.

Some of the main changes and improvements in Calculate Linux 14.12 include updated timezones, a number of older wallpapers that were originally featured in the previous releases, support for installing CL as a host system, faster checks for updates, and improved touchpad configuration. Also, Shotwell has been removed, the FFMpeg libraries have been added, and numerous other fixes have been implemented as well.

For more details, you can take a look at the official release announcement for Calculate Linux 14.12. Some of the flavors, like the desktop edition for example, are Live CDs and they work very well, either from a USB key or inside a virtual environment, like VirtualBox.
