Sad news for Patrick Jane’s fans: in February next year, the charmer will be hanging up his vest and his favorite cup of tea and will be going off the air for good. His days as a special consultant on murder cases are over.

CBS has just confirmed that “The Mentalist” ends with season 7, which will conclude on February 18, 2015, EW reports.

“The Mentalist” stars Simon Baker and was once one of the most watched series on the network. However, as things go, ratings started to decrease for the procedural drama, to the point where its cancelation has been an open secret until now.

The good news is that the series will be back on TV sooner than anticipated, so at least fans won’t have to wait until next year to start preparing for the final goodbye. Season 7 premieres on November 30, with CBS bosses deciding to move it temporarily in the slot occupied by “The Good Wife,” on Sundays at 9 p.m.

The other piece of excellent news is that “The Mentalist” could find a new home once it concludes its run on CBS, the trade publication says. However, that’s a shot in the dark at this point: while it’s theoretically very easy to move procedurals from one network to another, as countless examples prove it, no other network has yet expressed interest in this one. That we know of, that is.

So until further notice, we can only assume that the show is going away for good. I suppose producers will work under the same assumption, so at least we’ll be getting a satisfying series finale.

Are you ready to say goodbye to Patrick Jane, or has this completely taken you by surprise? Let me know in the comments.
