Right after we stepped into the New Year, custom ROM specialist Cyanogen treated us with a mighty surprise. It rolled out its latest ROM version built on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop for a slew of devices.

CyanogenMod 12 was made available for a bunch of mobile gadgets including the Nexus 4, 6, 7 (2013 Wi-Fi model), OnePlus One, LG G3, HTC One (M7) and (M8), Motorola Moto G and X and many others.

Nexus 9 gets nightly treatment

Well, this week CyanogenMod is extending the availability of its nightlies to Google’s newest tablet, the Nexus 9.

The tablet can be updated up to Android 5.0.2, but if you want something else onboard, you can try installing CyanogenMod 12 on it and see how you like it.

However, take into account that the nightly term refers to a “beta” stream of the custom ROM, so you can expect to encounter a bug or two.

Also you may find that a slew of new features might not be supported yet. Although Cyanogen is constantly working to perfect their work.

Moreover, take into consideration that, to have CyanogenMod 12 on top of your Nexus 9, you will need an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery.

Nexus devices are usually perfect for this kind of thing, as flashing back to stock in case something goes wrong is most of the time achieved without much difficulty.

Cyanogen is dreaming up a world where Android is Google-free

In related news, Cyanogen porting its latest nightly to the Nexus 9 might be the company’s latest move to attack Google.

Not so long ago Cyanogen CEO made some interesting comments about how he envisions the future of the Android platform.

Kirt McMaster explains that he has hopes that in the future Android will be devoid of Google. The search giant might allow developers to create third-part apps, but its own host of software has always been given the preferential treatment.

But Cyanogen wants to allow developers to integrate their own apps and services directly into the operating system without much fuss. With this in mind, the custom ROM maker is planning to launch its own app store.
