To some of you that have been following the tech industry throughout the ages, the Commodore 64 name might hit very close to home.

This was an 8-bit home computer introduced in January 1982 by Commodore International. The product eventually managed to make its way into the Guinness Book of World Records as the highest selling single computer model of all time, with a whopping estimated amount of 10 to 17 million units sold.

If you ever found yourself reminiscing the good old time wishing you could get your hands on a laptop version of the Commodore 64, the good news is that now you can.

Commodore 64 gets revived back to life in 2014

In a fun project entitled “The future was 8bit,” a hardware hacker has taken apart one of those little, portable netbook devices and replaced its screen, processor and other internal components in order to turn it into a portable Commodore 64.

The concoction comes with a 7-inch display and has a touchpad that works in concert with a joystick and an infrared remote control.

Does it sound too good to be true? Well, it’s not, because these C64p laptops can be purchased by old timers or anyone with an interest for technology from eBay. But you’ll need to hurry because there are only a few items available for purchase.

Years after releasing the Commodore 64, the company also rolled out the C64DTV which is a C64-in-a keyboard sort of device, users could plug into their TV sets and play classic games with.

The laptop is actually based on the C64DTV

The developer of the C64p laptop took the interior of the C64DTV and put it inside the 7-inch frame of a netbook. The netbook was almost completely obliterated, except for the chassis and battery, which can offer up to 3.5 hours of juice.

The lappy can be used to run a number of games but not only. Actually, the C64p can be turned into a real computer and you can take advantage of things like C64 BASIC, JiffyDOS and GEOS.

However, you need to note that not all classic Commodore 64 games or software will work. As we mentioned above, the C64p is based on the C64DTV and not the actual C64 computer, you know the one that went into the book of records.

Anyway, if the prospect of owning such a retro computer sounds appealing to you, you can pick one up from eBay if you’re willing to take out around £595 / $931 / €755.
