Borderlands 2 has apparently sold "well over 12 million copies," according to Gearbox Software Chief Executive Officer Randy Pitchford.

The executive has revealed the information during a podcast with Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, Xbox Live's director of programming, adding that he learned the figure during an earnings call with 2K.

Borderlands debuted in 2009, followed in 2012 by Borderlands 2, and became wildly successful due to the mix of crazy action, insane humor and the fact that the game is generally about having fun at the expense of others, a popular human pastime.

The unique blend of first-person shooter mechanics and role-playing game elements certainly helped the franchise achieve its notoriety, by providing a diverse and satisfying palette of gameplay interactions, and the 4-player cooperative mode was the icing on the cake, making the whole experience even more exciting.

The franchise has a bright future

Borderlands is publisher 2K's most lucrative franchise, and it's now headed to the Xbox One computer entertainment system from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 home console from Sony, in the form of Borderlands: The Handsome Collection.

The bundle includes Borderlands 2 and the recently released Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, together with all the downloadable content released so far for both video games.

Pitchford has revealed that many gamers asked them to bring Borderlands to next-gen, and that 2K partnered up with Armature Studio and Iron Galaxy Studios, the custodians of Xbox One's fighting game Killer Instinct, in order to deliver the shooter to the new generation of consoles.

Due to the fact that Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel was made on the same engine as Borderlands 2, it was really easy to also get it ported to Xbox One and PS4.

The team mentioned last year that The Pre-Sequel didn't get a new-gen release due to a lack of internal resources, so the partnership with the two studios was a great opportunity to also get it alive and kicking on the new hardware.

Borderlands keeps on growing

The re-release of the old-gen video games will likely be met with enthusiasm by the crowds, especially since you can transfer your progress from the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles and pick up where you left things off.

Pitchford has also mentioned that the original Borderlands could also get a remake for the new consoles, but that it all depends on how well The Handsome Collection is received.

Of course, everyone is wondering when Borderlands 3 is going to drop, but developer Gearbox Software has mentioned that it is a daunting task to even consider what a follow-up to Borderlands 2 would entail, and for the time being has refrained from officially announcing a sequel.
