Black Lab Linux, a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS "Trusty Tahr" that features a modified GNOME desktop environment, has received a sizable update pack that brings a lot of new stuff.

The Black Lab Linux distribution has been growing steadily over the last couple of years and it's now a really powerful and easy-to-use operating system.

The developers have been going back and forth between Xfce and GNOME during the cycle, but they have finally settled on GNOME. They also made a few subtle changes to it and it's a little bit different from regular versions.

The devs have opted for a more conservative implementation of GNOME, but there is also a handy dock available and some of the old functions have been kept as well.

It should be an interesting experience for users who haven't tried a Linux system before and for users who are already accustomed with the new GNOME desktop.

Black Lab Linux just got some interesting updates

Not many distros choose this method of disseminating upgrades, but it's not all that uncommon. In fact, if users already have Black Lab Linux 6 installed, they can upgrade their systems just by entering a couple of commands in a terminal:

code
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
"Today we are announcing the immediate availability of Black Lab Professional Desktop 6.0 SR2. SR2 (Service Release 2) is a collection of all security updates for October and November 2014.  The Black Lab SDK 1.9 also installs and configures Docker for you for full container integration," said the developers.

Users will also find some extra packages like a Linux Kernel 3.17.2 Installer and the latest Skype 4.3. Other included packages are GNOME Clock, GNOME Weather, GNOME 3.10.3, Calibre 1.48, and GNUCash 2.6.

Black Lab Linux is also one of the few operating systems that chose to integrate the new App Grid, which replaced Ubuntu Software Center. It's a much faster solution, but some of the Ubuntu users noticed that the new solution is not a very transparent one.

Also, Black Lab Linux uses Abiword instead of LibreOffice. It's not as good, but it's a little bit faster on older PCs.

Check the official announcement for more details this version. You can download Black Lab Linux 6.0 right now from Softpedia, although only the 64-bit edition is available. The problem with GNOME desktop has been fixed in VirtualBox, so feel free to take it for a spin.
