Australian rapper Iggy Azalea had an impressive night at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards, held earlier this week in Las Vegas, where she took home the awards for Best Top Rap Song, Top Rap Artist and Top Streaming Artist.

She didn’t deserve to win Top Rap Song, because the song she won with, “Fancy” ft. Charli XCX, came out one full month before the eligibility period started, a petition on Change.org stated. This way, she cheated her way to a win and managed to rob Nicki Minaj and her “Anaconda” of her rightful win in the process.

The petition got over 21,000 signatures in a very short time since it was started, prompting heated debates and many jokes online: it was funny to hear that so many people had rallied to convince Billboard they should retract the Top Rap Song award, and give it to Nicki instead.

It is now closed, as an update posted today announces. “A spokesperson for Dick Clark Productions, who produces the award show, has said that the award is still Iggy’s unfortunately,” it reads, urging fans to help Iggy win the award next year, by purchasing online and requesting her new music on radio.

The request makes sense, since Billboard has announced that the eligibility period is only arbitrary and that the actual criteria by which a winner is selected are “fan interactions with music, including album and digital singles sales, radio airplay, touring, streaming and social interactions.”

In other words, who wins is the most popular, not necessarily the most worthy.
