The teams at developer DICE and publisher Electronic Arts are announcing that they are planning to continue to deliver long-term support for Battlefield 4, with a new major patch for the first-person shooter coming in March and with a new initiative which will see one map being created by the studio together with members of the community.

The so-called Winter Patch is designed to polish elements of the game experience like netcode and soldier collision.

Squad Obliteration will also be tweaked in order to become the leading competitive game mode for Battlefield 4 in the coming months.

Thomas Andersson, the creative director working on the title states in the official announcement that "Squad Obliteration features two five-player teams fighting for possession of a bomb on the map. Your goal is to destroy two out of three enemy bases with these bombs to win. Our ambition with Squad Obliteration is to create something fast and challenging for the players and an entertaining experience for those who watch the matches."

DICE also has long-term plans to deliver a weapon pack, although no date has been specified, and there are also one or two other bigger content drops prepared for the shooter.

Battlefield 4 will focus more on its community

The developers are also saying that they want to try something entirely different by creating and adding a community-made map.

Gamers will be able to explain what elements of the game they find fun, and their input will be used to shape a multiplayer level that will be first tested in the Community Test Environment, offered only to Battlefield 4 Premium members.

DICE says that it will offer a look at the creative process and that once the map is complete, it will be offered for free to all those who play the shooter, regardless of platform.

Given that Battlefield Hardline is set to launch next month, it's interesting to see that the older titles continue to be supported in the long term.

It will be interesting to see what kind of map the team at DICE and the community can create and whether the coming Winter Patch will be enough to deal with the issues that some players have been reporting.

Battlefield Hardline is coming on March 17 in the United States and on March 19 in Europe.
