Rocksteady Studios' upcoming action-adventure video game, Batman: Arkham Knight, has received an "M for Mature" rating from the Electronic Software Ratings Board.

The information comes from the developers themselves, who say that the ESRB's rating took them by surprise, as the team didn't specifically aim to create a mature game.

The previous installments in the Arkham series, Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City, both earned a "T for Teen" rating from the ESRB, IGN reports.

This means that the upcoming Arkham Knight will feature themes and content that are even more serious than its forebears.

Rocksteady founder and Game Director Sefton Hill expressed his surprise at this and confessed that the team had not planned for this, but instead just told the story that everyone really wanted to tell.

This was the case with the studio's previous two games, during the development of which no one wrote or created anything with a specific rating in mind.

Unintended repercussions

Unfortunately for some younger members of the audience, this means that they won't be able to enjoy the content of Batman: Arkham Knight, but the game isn't going anywhere, so they'll still be able to take it up once they have reached the proper age to do so.

Furthermore, this means that game's story isn't watered down in any way, attempting to reach a mass market audience, but instead focused on telling whatever Rocksteady wanted to convey through it, which is good news for everyone else.

Perhaps the team has decided to tackle some of the more racy elements of the Batman universe, as judging by the details provided so far, the narrative will provide a very intense experience.

The story follows Batman at the peak of his powers, having to once again go against Scarecrow and against a new mystery antagonist, the hardest challenge that the caped crusader has ever had to face.

Batman: Akrham Knight is scheduled to come out on June 2 worldwide, headed to the Windows PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4 platforms.
