Players can still enjoy the combat in different ways

The combat system in Batman: Arkham Knight is designed to encourage awesome fights and impressive behavior, according to developer Rocksteady Studios, but this doesn't mean that players won't be able to use stealth takedowns and go through the title without alerting others.

The Batman Arkham series has delighted fans over the years with the special Free Flow combat system that allows the Caped Crusader to take on multiple foes in stylish fights and to rack up great combos as well as high scores.

However, the titles also had the so-called Invisible Predator moments, where players had to take out a large room filled with enemies in stealthy ways in order to avoid getting shot at from multiple angles.

In Batman: Arkham Knight, Rocksteady is adding new mechanics like the Fear Takedown, which allows Batman to take out three targets in quick succession.

The new mechanics keep combat awesome in Arkham Knight

According to Rocksteady's Player Code Director Adam Doherty, who talks with GamesRadar, the fighting system has been tweaked to allow for lengthier combos and to ensure that everything feels as awesome as possible.

"Every move that goes in, we make sure it has a purpose and we make sure that all the timings are just perfect. And there’s always a window after a move where you get an opportunity to counter, no matter what they’re doing – they’ll just slow down their animation a little bit. We want the player to feel like what they’re doing is awesome, regardless of how good they are," he explains.

Stealth is still a valid option

Doherty does emphasize that going through Batman: Arkham Knight as you would a stealth game like Metal Gear or Splinter Cell is still a valid option, but in the end, players will have to take on groups of foes so the Fear takedown and the other mechanics will make sure that they can take them out in an awesome way.

Batman: Arkham Knight launches on June 2, worldwide, for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and you can bet that more details about the combat and gameplay will debut until then.
