Stardock Entertainment announces Ashes of the Singularity, an upcoming science-fiction real-time strategy game on a massive scale.

The title takes places in a time when humans have shed their limiting bodies, becoming beings of pure energy, controlling large amounts of units using their minds alone, which pretty much means that instead of being invaded by a hive mind, humans have essentially become one.

Space wars are not fought with a handful of units anymore, but instead with thousands of deadly robotic constructs, endlessly replaced by new war machines.

The technological singularity, one of the popular science fiction apocalypse scenarios, significantly altered the destiny of life in the universe. Once mankind's guide to through the stars, the lone sentient AI is now engaged in a ruthless battle that will shape the future of the galaxy.

Ashes of the Singularity has players fight for control of various regions, using multiple armies, controlling resources and maintaining supply lines, with battles that are several orders of magnitude larger than any seen in conventional strategy games to date.

The Nitrous Engine will revolutionize strategy games

Ashes of the Singularity makes use of Stardock's Nitrous Engine, developed by Oxide Games, specifically built to enable vast armies to be displayed on-screen without your computer catching fire.

Players will be able to control huge fleets, down to the individual level, or at a macro scale, and the engine will also assist them with a huge amount of AI interactions.

The Nitrous Engine touts the ability to make every gun on every ship fire using its own targeting and ballistic model, which brings wargames to an unparallelled scale. The team's goal is to replicate war on a massive scale, with battles being fought on multiple fronts, and with armies that move realistically, acting like collections of individual units.

"The scale of Ashes required us to create a new type of 3D engine. We wanted to make a game that didn't just depict a battle but an entire war in real time, with thousands of independent units acting simultaneously," Dan Baker, one of the graphics architects at Oxide Games, revealed during the announcement.
