Clip edited to reflect reality, casts doubt on other promos

An eagle-eyed user has noticed a strange discrepancy between the original Apple Watch video and an edited version that went online this week: the screen is smaller in the latter.

For a device whose display is already minute, it’s rather disappointing to see it shrunken down. The good news is that Apple didn’t lie about the specs. Only the video lied.

Apple edits video and photo gallery

It’s unclear what prompted the company to revisit the promotional materials. Maybe it was fear of another PR debacle. Maybe they simply didn’t know the video wasn’t accurate until this week. Whatever the reason, the new images show a considerably smaller display or, looking at it the other way around, a considerably larger bezel.

It’s not particularly alarming. After all, they basically just messed up on the rendering a little. Everyone knows that these clips don’t show the actual device, but rather just an amazingly realistic render made using CAD (computer aided design) software.

In other words, they made the screen look bigger than the advertised numbers (accidentally or not).

Software has changed a little too

As some have also pointed out, the interface has changed a little too. This also isn’t surprising, considering that the software for the Apple Watch is still a work in progress, while manufacturing won’t start until January.

The device was on display for one full day in Paris at the Colette store at 213 rue Saint-Honoré, 1st Arrondissement. The showcase was initially said to be a no-touchy affair, but then some photos were published with people wearing them and having giggles. However, we were told that the units were running “demo” software. Sort of like a slideshow of the key features just looping on the screen.

Apple needs to get this one right

Whether or not the current Apple Watch video is now fully accurate, you can expect more changes to emerge in the months leading up to its launch. However, Apple would be doing themselves a huge favor if they left everything intact and just got it right.

After years of speculation and constant bickering that Tim Cook can’t innovate, Apple really needs to nail this one. Especially since the media is already on its case with the #bendgate thing.
