Back to School kicks off with gift cards, but no discounts

In usual fashion, Apple has kicked off its Back to School promo in Australia and New Zealand offering gift cards valued between $25 and $125 for purchases like iPad, MacBook Air, and even iPhone.

The promo is basically the same thing that United States customers get around summer. Apple sometimes offers discounts, but generally it prefers (and has preferred for the past few years) to offer gift cards instead. These can be used to buy either additional hardware or additional software in the iOS and Mac app stores.

Gift Card scheme

The promo states that qualifying students can buy a Mac and get a A$100 gift card in Australia, and a NZ$125 one in New Zealand. Eligible models include MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, and Mac Pro.

Buy an iPad Air or iPhone and get a A$50 gift card. Or buy an iPad mini and get a A$25 gift card. You’ll also save on a Mac or iPad with education pricing. iPhone 6, 5s, or 5c or iPad Air or iPad Air 2 qualify for a A$50 / NZ$65 gift card, while iPads yield A$25 / NZ$30 gift cards.

These prices are generally reflected identically in US currencies, and with the recent price adjustments in Europe, buyers across the old continent should see identical pricing schemes as well.

To qualify for the deal, buyers must be either a university student or a student accepted to a university. Parents buying for a university student also qualify, as do teachers or staff members.

Upon purchase, you’ll receive a gift card not for the iTunes Store, but for the Apple Store. In other words, it needs to be used to purchase products available in Apple’s brick and mortar venues.
