Registrants to the Mac Development Program are receiving word from Cupertino that OS X Server 4.0.2 Developer Preview 14S347 is now available for testing. To download the software, a paid subscription is required and a Mac from 2007 or newer.

OS X Server has been a standalone app for a while now. Users basically turn a Client OS X installation into a Server installation by downloading and installing the OS X Server app from the Mac App Store. It sells for $19.99 / €17.99 and provides all the necessary tools for both small and large organizations.

How to download OS X Server 4.0.2 Developer Preview

Interested parties can head over to the Mac Dev Center and download the build straight from there.

The new release is a beta for developers and it’s offered free of charge. However, because it’s a beta, it is not recommended for production purposes. In fact, no beta software is recommended for important work, and even more so when it comes to server software.

According to people who are familiar with the seed notes, OS X Server 4.0.2 requires OS X 10.10.1, the current version of Yosemite. Supported computers include iMac (Mid 2007 or newer), MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer), MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer), MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer), Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer), Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer), or Xserve (Early 2009),

Testers will further need at least two gigs of RAM and 10 GB of available disk space. Testers who plan on using Caching Server will require as much as 50 GB of free disk space.

The release notes state that “Clean installs, updates from OS X Server 4, and upgrade and migration from OS X Snow Leopard, OS X Lion, OS X Mountain Lion, and OS X Mavericks systems are supported for this seed.”

Under “what’s new and noteworthy to test,” Apple mentions the following: “Upgrade and migration from OS X Snow Leopard and higher systems; Remote administration of OS X Server 4.0.2; Number of Xsan clients supported is on par with Xsan 3.”

OS X 10.10.2 (Yosemite)

Apple has released the new server software in tandem with OS X 10.10.2 build 14C68k, the second Yosemite beta that has made its way into developers’ hands and will soon be released publicly.

In a rather atypical move, Apple has not included a set of focus areas in the seed notes for OS X 10.10.2, but there is a known issue listed: “Opening documents from iCloud Drive might fail. Move files out of iCloud Drive to open them.”
