Indian Sony phones owners might be the first to get Lollipop

Another day, another page in the Android 5.0 Lollipop for Sony handsets story. Google’s latest build made its debut in the wild over five months ago, and since then most key tech players in the industry like HTC, LG, Samsung or Motorola have picked up the new version for their flagship models.

Even if Sony has been one of the first device makers stepping forward and promising the new update for a lot of its devices, we are yet to see the rollout begin.

Recently, it has also come to light that Sony is pretty ambivalent about updating non-Xperia Z smartphones, as the device maker is currently concentrating on bringing Lollipop to a select few devices.

Well, as Android 5.1 Lollipop is expected to make it out to Nexus devices, Sony Xperia Z handsets are still waiting to receive their own update.

Back in Barcelona at MWC 2015, a Sony Xperia Z3 model was spotted on display running Google’s latest and greatest, so we assumed it wouldn't be long before the new build finally starts making an appearance.

Sony might be bringing Lollipop in India first

Now, a new leaked image pulled out by the folks at Whats on Tech reveals that Sony is in the final stages of prepping the update for the Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact smartphones.

The update will initially go out in India, so owners of the handsets living outside the country’s borders will probably have to wait a little longer.

As you can see for yourself in the image, the OTA release is currently uploading, and when it arrives you can expect it to weight around 630.23MB for the Xperia Z3 and 517.86MB for the Xperia Z2.

It is expected to bestow the usual Android 5.0 Lollipop goodies, plus Sony’s own improved custom UI along for the ride.

By the look of things, the new update might start hitting users in India any time now. When that happens, you will probably receive a notification on your phone alerting you that Lollipop is currently available for your device.

Or you can take the pro-active route and check its availability manually by going to Settings > About Phone > System updates > Check now.
