It’s only been a few days since the first unofficial Android 5.0 Lollipop ROM that could be installed as a daily driver was published online and now it looks like the Google Play Edition is getting the real thing.

Shortly after Google started the rollout of the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for LG’s G Pad 8.3 GPE, another GPE device has been given the green light for the upgrade, the Xperia Z Ultra.

This means that Sony Xperia Z Ultra is the second Google Play Edition device that is getting the Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade since HTC announced last week that the update has been delayed for the One M7 and One M8 GPE smartphones.

AndroidCentral reports the official Android 5.0 Lollipop update now rolling out to Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition has around 400MB in size, but requires at least 500MB of storage in order to successfully install on the smartphone.

As expected, the update is pushed OTA (over the air) in stages, so it might take a while until it reaches all Sony Xperia Ultra Z Google Play Edition devices.

Hopefully, this version of Android will not introduce any of the bugs reported by Nexus 4, 5 and 7 owners who have been complaining about the update since its release last month.

Keep in mind that this version of Android 5.0 Lollipop may not bring some of the features usually included in Xperia smartphones given the fact that the Google Play Edition devices are powered by stock versions of Android.

The update brings lots of visual changes and improved performance

Still, those who own this Xperia Z Ultra variant will probably want to know what’s included in the update and if it’s worth making the upgrade to Lollipop.

Well, the latter is unclear for the moment, as the upgrade has only arrived on a small number of units, but as soon as more Xperia Z Ultra GPE owners have installed Lollipop on their devices, we will know for sure if the update is bug-free.

Until then, you might want to know that Android 5.0 Lollipop will bring major visual changes, such as Material Design UI. The update will also improve performance and it will add lots of new features and tweaks.

With Lollipop on your smartphone, you will be able to check out notifications directly on the lock screen without having to wake up the handset. A new battery saving mode will be introduced as well, along with a handful of privacy options such as Smart Lock.

If you happen to own the Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition and already installed the Android 5.0 Lollipop, then let us know in the comments section how you found the new update.
