The chip maker is preparing a smart glass product

Allwinner is a low-cost chip manufacturer from China that is providing silicone chips to mostly dirt cheap smartphones and laptops with affordable price tags.

As it turns out, the company is looking to branch out of the chip-making business and build something pretty unusual, if you ask us.

According to a report coming out of Giz China, Allwinner has been prototyping a Google Glass alternative that will cost only $199 / €179.

And if you ask the company, their smart glass will be far better than what Google is currently offering. Powering the head-mounted wearable is an Allwinner A33 SoC which fuels a lot of tablets these days.

More than that, Allwinner has partnered up with Taiwanese design house Coretronic, to make the wearable look as stylish as possible.

The smart glasses take advantage of the same prism optic technology that the Google Glass uses. Apart from that, you get Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the ability to work via voice control when paired with a smartphone.

We currently don’t have any timeline for when the Google Glass competitor will be released into the wild, but we’ll keep an eye out for it.

The product will probably go on sale in China first and maybe later internationally, but that’s just a guess.
