Earlier this month, we told you ASUS had a new tablet in the pipeline, in the form of the VivoTab 8, which is basically a pen-less version of the VivoTab Note 8 which got launched back in early 2014.

But back then we couldn't tell you when the tablet would make a debut on the market or how much it would cost. Now Liliputing reports that the device maker will make the tablet available quite soon, starting this October for $199 / €156.

The VivoTab Note 8 originally sold for $330 / €225, but the slate can be found with retailers like Amazon even for $250 / €193.

The VivoTab became popular with tableters due to its smart pen, but as you might be aware, lots of users have been complaining that they beloved pen has stopped working. A bunch of workarounds to fix the issue have been identified, but they all seem to be temporary solutions.

New pen-less ASUS VivoTab version is coming next month

Anyway, for those who don’t need the Wacom pen or just want to by-pass the issues altogether, ASUS is launching the VivoTab 8.

The new model comes with an 8-inch IPS display with 1280 x 800 resolution and wide viewing angles and an Intel Atom Z3745 Bay Trail quad-core under the hood, working together with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

Other selling points of the new tablet include built-in GPS, 802.11n Wi-Fi, two cameras (2MP on the back and in front) and microSD card for expanding memory up to 64GB. The 15.2Whr battery inside should provide the tablet with up to 8 hours of run time.

If you’re worried about portability, we’ll also mention the ASUS VivoTab 8 measures 8.3 x 4.9 x 0.35 inches / 210 x 124 x 8.89 mm and weighs less than 340 g / 0.74 lbs.

If you want cheaper, you better look to HP or Toshiba

Considering recent news, the ASUS VivoTab 8 is not the cheapest Windows 8.1 with Bing tablet out there. But the appeal of the VivoTab Note 8 might prompt a lot of customers to give this model a try.

HP has just unveiled two new budget Stream tablets today and Toshiba did the same not so long ago. They sell for less, but the VivoTab 8 has more memory and storage than the slates mentioned above.

So if your daily activities don’t depend on a tablet with a smart stylus like the VivoTab Note 8, the new model might be exactly what you need in your life.
