At CES 2015, ASUS was one of the few device makers that actually had something interesting to show us in terms of smartphones and tablets (hybrids).

If you missed our earlier coverage, we’ll take an opportunity to remind you that the Taiwanese company rolled out two handsets, the ZenFone 2 and ZenFone Zoom.

The ZenFone 2 was actually the first smartphone to be announced with 4GB of RAM, while the second model debuted as the thinnest handset with 3x optical zoom.

ASUS is also making a tinnier ZenFone 2

The ZenFone 2 was unveiled with a 5.5-inch display, but according to Taiwanese media (via website Sogi) ASUS also has a 5-inch variation up its sleeve.

The larger model is expected to go on sale globally starting March, so the shrunken version should make its way into retail shortly after.

The report doesn't mention whether we can expect to see the smaller handset take advantage of the same 4GB of RAM or ASUS will offer it with only 2GB.

Specs of the 5-inch model remain a mystery

Still, we’re expecting the new model to boast almost identical specs to the ZenFone 2, including a Gorilla Glass 3-protected display with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, an LTE-enabled, 64-bit Intel Atom Z3580 processor and a 13MP main snapper with 5 elements, f/2.0 aperture lens plus a dual-color “Real Tone” LED flash.

Back at CES 2015, ASUS mentioned that ZenFone 2 would go on sale with a super affordable $200 / €176 price tag, although it’s pretty hard to believe the device maker was referring to the 4GB of RAM model.

However, we have to assume the smaller ZenFone 2 will have a lower starting price.

For the time being there are no images showing us the device, but once they become available, you can be sure we’ll let you know. So for now, refresh your memory by taking a look at the 5.5-inch model in the gallery below.
