14 DAY TRIAL // Every once in a while, a company will announce something important or groundbreaking and the world will cheer. Then there are the occasions on the opposite spectrum, which only leave mild curiosity behind.
What Advanced Micro Devices and ASMedia did recently falls squarely in the latter category.
They have inked a partnership agreement of some sort, according to a company post on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE).
However, that's all anyone knows on the matter. Beyond that they will collaborate on research and development, nothing else is known.
What we can assume is that AMD will outsource some chipset R&D development to ASMedia in order to save costs and resources.
This, in turn, will allow AMD to focus on APU and semi-customized products, while ASMedia creates SATA solutions for its chipsets and/or I/O devices, maybe its SSDs. We will have to wait for some official announcement on either part, although we won't be holding our breath.
In the meantime, we'll be focusing more on things like the AMD Radeon R9 390X graphics card and whatever driver the corporation will release along with or in anticipation for it, if any. The Mantle API will also hold our thoughts just fine in the interim, although we wouldn't put it past the new team to reveal some new storage device together.
