Pop star turned budding actress Rita Ora gave every woman at the Oscar 2015 festivities a run for their money in the “taking risks” department, wearing a Donna Karan dress that could only be described as the night’s most daring, but Irina Shayk and Heidi Klum came hot on their heels.

While the tone of the night on the red carpet at the actual awards show was muted colors for classic designs and statement necklaces, at the afterparties, sheer cut-outs were “in.” They were so “in” that certain stars, like these 3 mentioned above, almost overdosed on them - and came dangerously close to killing the trend altogether.

Models show off flawless figures in Versace

There’s something very appealing to a sheer cut-out that creates the impression of too much skin without actually showing it, because, after all, this is a red carpet at the biggest industry award we’re talking about: you can’t really show up almost nude and then expect to be on all the best dressed lists.

This was Rita’s biggest mistake (see the first video embedded below): not realizing that too much is, sometimes, too much. Her Donna Karan was made up of sheer fabric to an outrageous extent, leaving too little to the imagination.

Her dress was the most daring, but it was also among the tackiest.

Irina Shayk and Heidi Klum too came dangerously close to this level of tackiness: they both wore Versace gowns with plenty of sheer fabric, making it clear they were wearing nothing underneath, and revealing a lot of their flawless figures.

Irina and Heidi’s numbers weren’t as bad as Rita’s: first off, they didn’t show half as much skin as she did; secondly, there is something in a model’s attitude that helps them pull off outfits no other woman can, even if she works in showbiz and knows all the ropes.

You can see photos of Irina’s curious pants-dress combo and Heidi’s silver number in the gallery, and have a better look at the designs in the videos.

A night to remember

Because of the dress Rita Ora wore at the afterparties and the one she chose for the Oscars red carpet, a Marchesa ballgown that simply screamed try-hard, she’s found her way on most industry worst dressed lists.

Even so, she probably has no regrets about her sartorial choices: Rita is yet to be regarded as a fashionista and she’s still at an age when she can afford to experiment and have fun with her outfits, even if they don’t always translate well on the red carpet.

Plus, she got to attend her first Oscar gala, she performed for the first time (a song that’d been nominated, “Grateful” from “Beyond the Lights”) and she rubbed shoulders with a who’s who of the film industry.

Irina and Heidi didn’t attend the actual awards show, but they still had fun at the afterparties: Cristiano Ronaldo’s ex hit the star-studded Vanity Fair bash, attended by the majority of Oscar winners and guests, while Heidi partied with old pal Sir Elton John at his charity bash / Oscar viewing party.
