Many people are still playing Borderlands on their PlayStation 3 consoles, but since last year the multiplayer mode has been inaccessible due to GameSpy closure.

The original Borderlands game was not the only one affected by GameSpy’s closure, but it’s one of the first to have the multiplayer functionality restored.

Gearbox has just announced that, since the GameSpy multiplayer services that supported Borderlands 1, they have been working on bringing that functionality back on PlayStation 3.

Today, they have confirmed that the multiplayer mode will be restored to Borderlands 1 on PlayStation 3 in both North America and Europe, while in Japan at a later date.

Borderlands fans that still play the original game will be required to download and install an update in order for the multiplayer functionality to be restored.

It will be restored via an update containing new features and improvements

The new update introduces a few new elements for those who prefer to play with their friends or total strangers. First of all, Gearbox implemented a new matchmaking system, as well as some tweaks that will allow players to sort their friends list in a few different ways.

For example, they will be able filter their friends list by those who are playing Borderlands or who is online. Obviously, they can also sort their lists by alphabetical order.

Some things have been fixed as well, such as the “And They’ll Tel Two Friends” Trophy, which will now be granted correctly. Also, some improvements to the voice chat have been added.

On a side note, Gearbox announced that Borderlands 1 players that stored their saves in the cloud instead on their PlayStation 3 hard drives, then some settings like screen brightness, Y-Axis invert and possible a few more, may need to be reset.

The PC version of Borderlands already had its multiplayer functionality transitioned to Steamworks since last year and continues to be available.
