Build provided for testing and development purposes

Amid growing concerns that OS X Yosemite is capable of crippling Wi-Fi connections, Apple has commissioned a fix in the form of OS X 10.10.2, the second maintenance update targeting Yosemite computers.

Currently still in internal testing, the update is at its second beta. Unlike the first build, this one actually tells developers what to focus on. Namely, Wi-Fi.

The biggest problem with Yosemite, about to get fixed

OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 build 14C78 is the first beta in this new development cycle that actually comes with a list of focus areas. Granted, it’s not a list per se, as it only includes one reference to one component in need of testing: Wi-Fi.

An alarmingly large number of Yosemite users have been experiencing connectivity issues since October, when the software rolled out to the masses. The OS can’t keep a decent wireless connection active for more than a minute before it disconnects and fails to reconnect. Not everyone is reporting this issue, but the problem is clearly widespread.

A thread on Apple Support Communities discussing the issue since mid-October has reached more than 370K views and hosts 1,562 replies spanning dozens of pages (at the time of this post). The thread started with a post by user tomstephens89, who quickly learned that he was not alone.

He wrote, “I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss. Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet. Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.”

Perhaps as early as next week

Looking at how Apple has sped up the testing phases for both iOS and OS X in the past few months, it shouldn’t be too far-fetched to see 10.10.2 drop as early as Monday or Tuesday next week.

There’s also the matter of all these unsatisfied customers, which makes it even more urgent. It isn’t clear if Apple is targeting even more bugs with 10.10.2, but for now it seems that the company is solely focused on addressing the widely publicized Wi-Fi woes.
