14 DAY TRIAL // One and a half year after the removal of the HERE Maps from the Apple App Store, Nokia has just released its awesome HERE Maps app for Apple’s iOS mobile operating system, available now for iPhone devices, and it appears to be a true competitor for Apple’s own Maps app, as well as for Google’s Maps application for iOS.
Prominent features of the brand-new HERE Maps app for iOS include the ability to save maps, allowing users to use them while offline, walking directions, public transit for approximately 1000 cities, turn-by-turn navigation, voice guidance, support for search locations in offline mode, support for spoken street names in turn-by-turn navigation, support for getting directions in offline mode, and support for current location search in offline mode.
The initial HERE Maps app for iOS was removed in 2013 because of iOS 7 issues
We remind everyone that the initial HERE Maps was removed from the iTunes App Store because of the iOS 7 operating system, according to Nokia. As iOS is now at version 8.2, Nokia, who apparently was secretly working on the HERE Maps app for iOS, had no reason not to publish the application again on the App Store, as apparently the issues they encountered with iOS 7 have been resolved in iOS 8.
“We have made the decision to remove our HERE Maps app from the Apple App Store because recent changes to iOS 7 harm the user experience. iPhone users can continue to use the mobile web version of HERE Maps under m.here.com, offering them location needs, such as search, routing, orientation, transit information and more, all completely free of charge," said Nokia in a public announcement on December 27, 2013.
You can get the HERE Maps app for iPhone right now from the Apple App Store. However, please note that because of some recent issues with the iTunes Store, which was down today for maintenance, the app might not be available in all countries, so make sure that you check again at a later time.
