14 DAY TRIAL // Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 was quietly unveiled by Microsoft on new Lumia devices presented this week at MWC 2015, and although no announcement was provided, we’ve already found about the existence of some new options that could be part of an official release later this year.
Currently available on the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL, the new Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 appears to be featuring some options that are only paving the way for Windows 10 and actually attempt to keep the operating system up to date until the new release arrives.
There's still no word on when Microsoft could ship this particular update to the other Lumia devices out there, but expect it to land in the coming months, as we get closer to the official launch date of Windows 10.
Quick text
One feature that has recently been spotted on Windows Phone at MWC 2015 is called quick text and it allows users to easily introduce a pre-defined line of text in their messages or emails. Such an option comes in handy especially when trying to send quick messages when talking on the phone is not possible.
Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2 thus adds a new symbol in the suggestion bar that allows you to insert these user-defined lines of text.
It's not yet clear whether this option would be available on all devices or only on some, as WMPU writes that a Kyocera prototype was the only one having such an option.
Pin settings to Start
Another option that would really come in handy to those who like to customize their devices on a regular basis is the possibility of pinning settings to Start and thus access them a lot more easily.
Pinning a specific section of settings to Start is easy, as you just need to do a long press on the desired item to get an option to “Pin to start.”
Microsoft hasn't yet provided us with any specifics regarding Windows Phone 8.1 GDR2, so we're looking forward to an official announcement that could be offered anytime soon.
