The KDE-forked Trinity DE just got an update

Trinity, a desktop environment for Unix-like operating systems with a primary goal of retaining the overall KDE 3.5 computing style, has advanced to version R14 RC1 and is now ready for testing.

The Trinity Desktop Environment was forked out of KDE a long time ago. The main reason was to preserve the KDE 3.5 desktop design after the developers started to make some modifications that didn't please everyone.

The same thing happened with GNOME 2, which was forked into MATE, after the developers moved to GNOME 3. This was also radically different from the previous desktop experience and sparked a lot of talk in the community.

Unlike MATE or Cinnamon, two projects that have received a lot of attention over the years, the Trinity Desktop Environment was rather quiet and didn't evolve too much.

At least that was the case until now. A new version of this desktop has been released and it's quite different from what we were used to. Fortunately for its users, the general design and layout have remained pretty much the same, so the impact shouldn't be all that big.

Trinity Desktop Environment is a blast from the past

There is no doubt that Trinity is for people who really liked how things were done and not how things are now. It's like an application that refuses to evolve because it works just the way it is, so there is no good reason to change it or for it to evolve.

There are very few Linux distributions that include Trinity by default, and just a few repositories carry the packages.

"R14 has been over 2 years in development. This delay has allowed us to create a better, more feature-rich and more stable product than previous TDE releases. R14 is brimming with new features, such as a new hardware manager based on udev (HAL is no longer required), full network-manager 0.9 support, a brand new compositor, built-in threading support, and much more!"

"TDE R14 RC1 is available as either a LiveCD built on Ubuntu Trusty or as a set of packages for Ubuntu (Lucid, Precise, Trusty) or Debian (Wheezy). While the final TDE R14.0.0 release will support additional series this limited set was chosen to both increase reliability (all of these series are Long Term Support or equivalent) and shorten time-to-release," write the developers.

More details about this release can be found on the official website. You can download Trinity Desktop Environment R14 RC1 right now from Softpedia.
