Gamers will have to deal with a capable AI

The development team at Turtle Rock and publisher 2K Games have talked a lot about the multiplayer elements of their upcoming Evolve and the way the game is designed to deliver an asymmetrical experience focused on variety and exciting moments.

But the most recent video for the shooter takes a different path and shows off the single-player campaign, which can be enjoyed offline and will allow gamers to slot into any role they want, while the Artificial Intelligence of the game inhabits all other characters.

The two companies state, "The first match in this video features a single player as the monster against challenging AI hunters. The second features a single player controlling the full team of hunters by hot swapping between classes in battle."

The single player in Evolve will probably be serviceable, although a lot depends on the quality of the AI that Turtle Rock has managed to create, but the core structure of the game is clearly one that requires more than one human to be involved, with the ideal setup including four Hunters and one Monster.

It will be interesting to see if the player community finds any real value in the campaign or if it will only be a little more than an extended tutorial for those who are only discovering Evolve for the first time.

Evolve aims to longer term relevance

Evolve has managed to attract a lot of attention with its core concept, but the developers want the game to be more than a weekend affair for shooter fans.

Turtle Rock says that the variety of hunters and monsters included means that gamers will be able to find one which suits their own personality and play style and then spend hours mastering its skills and developing strategies that can surprise their opponents.

The company also has a solid plan for long-term support via DLC, which will deliver all new maps and modes for free while charging gamers for more characters and creatures.

Some fans are unhappy with the approach Turtle Rock and 2K Games have decided on, but the two companies claim that they only want to make sure that the shooter stays relevant for as long as possible.

Evolve will be out on the PC, the Xbox One from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 from Sony on February 10.
