Windows Defender will continue to be offered, it notes

Windows 10 will indeed come with a plethora of improvements in every single area, but many people want Microsoft to go even further with its work and call for the company to develop a new anti-virus solution that would provide more advanced protection than Windows Defender does.

Gabriel Aul, head of the Windows Insider Program, said in a short tweet that Windows Defender would continue to be offered, thus putting an end to hopes that a new anti-virus could be developed.

He, however, admitted that Windows Defender only provides “essential AntiMalware protection,” which is actually one of the reasons that made many people out there call for a new security solution for Windows 10.

Basic protection on Windows

Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials, the foundation of the default anti-malware, have only scored poor in security tests conducted by various labs worldwide, so it’s not a surprise that users hope to see a new anti-virus offered with Windows 10.

But Microsoft has always stated that Windows Defender is there only to provide basic protection and nothing more, so as soon as you install a third-party security product, the default Windows app is automatically disabled and you don’t have to manually remove it.

A popular request on UserVoice

Many of the users who posted on UserVoice explain that a better security solution in Windows 10 is indeed needed because customers shouldn’t be forced to pay for such an application after already having paid for the Windows license.

“Windows Defender should be much better. It doesn't need to have so many functionalities as third party AV, but it should much better at detecting and cleaning virus/malware. It must be nearly as good as third party companies. After all Microsoft has lots of money and people to make OS more safe,” the original thread posted on UserVoice reads.

At this moment, however, Microsoft has no intention of developing a new anti-virus product for Windows 10, so the upcoming operating system will ship with the same Windows Defender version as Windows 8.1 did, probably with a few improvements here and there.
