One of the first video editors launched on Windows Phone platform, Movie Maker, has just received an important update that brings lots of new features and improvements.

Among the most important highlights of this update, developer Venetasoft has confirmed new features like 4K and 2K video editing and encoding (upscaling and downscaling too), as well as squared (1:1) encoding formats.

The developer has also stated that it has 100% rewritten Instagram encoder and uploader and that it has added squared or centered formats for Instagram video uploader.

Also, audio waveform on all the editing pages, for precise trim/crop/split has been added too, along with new “video info” menu on the editing and sharing pages.

Some new features are only available in the paid version

Those who purchase Movie Maker 8.1 will also be able to upload video to YouTube, but the options to download video and MP3 files from YouTube are available for free.

The image duration has been upped to 33 ms (1 frame), for perfect time-lapses compositions (by popular demand), and the menu bar was reorganized in order to better handle the new features implemented in this update.

There's also a new Lumia Imaging library, while the old Nokia library has been removed. Last but not least, media blocks in the timeline have now different colors depending on the type: video, title, transition, image, voice recording, audio track.

If you don't have the application installed yet, you can now download Movie Maker 8.1 for Windows Phone 1.2.0.5 for $1.49 via Windows Phone Store. The application should be fully compatible with all devices powered by Windows Phone 8.1 and up.

A trial version is available as well, but you will only be able to edit 10-second videos and you will only benefit from 30 encodings tops. Those who purchase the app will get unlimited video duration and encodings.
