The Verizon exclusive won’t get Android 5.0.x updates

Motorola was one of the first device manufacturers to pick up the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for its handsets right from the beginning.

Unlike companies such as Sony, which have taken their sweet time to produce the update, Motorola has been at the forefront of Lollipops.

While some of Motorola’s phones have already received the update, there are some models that are still waiting to get the same treatment. For example, the first-gen Moto X is finally getting the much craved Lollipop starting this week.

But more updates are coming, as Motorola is striving to bring as many handsets as possible on the new OS version.

The Droid Turbo to go directly to Android 5.1

You might remember that the Droid Turbo is a model which is currently sold exclusively by Verizon Wireless.

Well, even if the handset hasn’t received Android 5.0 Lollipop yet, Motorola software engineer Luciano Carvalho has announced that owners of this phone are in for a big surprise.

According to him, the handset will be updated directly to Android 5.1 Lollipop, thus skipping all 5.0 updates in the process. Most Motorola handsets are yet to receive the Android 5.1 Lollipop treatment, so the Droid Turbo goes from being at the back of the pack straight in front.

However, users shouldn’t expect the new update to arrive completely bug-free. As Carvalho himself explains, it is “nearly impossible” for bugs not to be part of the equation when you’re dealing with “a complex software running on a complex hardware, with thousands of different environment conditions and thousands of usage variations.”

Android 5.1 comes with its fair share of issues

A few days ago, we detailed some of the issues Nexus users who have updated to Android 5.1 Lollipop have been reporting, so it’s possible that Droid Turbo users will have to deal with them too.

We are told that the new Android 5.1 Lollipop update will add native VoLTE support to the Droid Turbo, but no information is shared with us about when this is going to happen.

Those of you who are currently looking to purchase a smartphone should know that Verizon is currently selling the Droid Turbo for $149 / €139 on contract or $549.99 / €514 outright.
