Quitalities will consist of exploding heads

Video game developer NetherRealms Studios is announcing that it will include an entirely new fatality type in the upcoming Mortal Kombat X, called a Quitality, which is designed to punish those players who quit in the middle of the match.

The attached video offers a quick look at the way a character's head simply explodes when the player controlling him drops from the match, allowing the other engaged gamer to snatch victory.

The Quitality has a relatively unfortunate name, but it does seem like a good way to introduce some civility into multiplayer matches of Mortal Kombat X and to persuade more players to stay online even if they are being on the losing end of the battle.

For a long time, the fighting game genre has been affected by the fact that it's too easy to simply quit when a match is not going well in order to quickly search for another.

The Quitality for Mortal Kombat X will not solve the issue entirely, but it's nice to see that the development team is introducing a new gameplay mechanic that will benefit the community.

NetherRealms Studios has not said whether it will also introduce a way for the matchmaking system in the title to actively punish those who quit.

The new game will offer a new take on the genre

Mortal Kombat X aims to bring into the series some of the mechanics that the developers have first tried out in Injustice: Gods Among Us, with a bigger focus on the interaction between the characters and the environments around them, but the core mechanics of the series will be largely unchanged and Fatalities will be as gruesome as ever.

The cast of fighters is being tweaked, with some new faces that offer innovative moves for players to try out, but also plenty of old hands which the fans love.

NetherRealms is also saying that it wants to create an engaging story that will jump forward 25 years and will allow each character to interact with the universe in new ways.

Mortal Kombat X will be out on the PC, the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the Xbox One on April 14, and there are also last-gen versions of the title arriving later in 2015.
