This is the development branch of Wine, install with care

Wine 1.7.35 has been released and the developers have made a number of improvements for some of the core components and they've added support for more apps and games.

Wine actually stands for Wine, it’s not an emulator. It's a compatibility layer that allows users to run Windows apps and games, in the same way the compatibility settings are implemented in newer Windows operating systems. There is no need for an official Windows license and using Wine is perfectly legal as long as the application being run is original.

Even if more and more developers are now also releasing their applications and games for Linux as well, it will be a long time until this is the norm. Until then, people will have to rely on Wine and the makers of this great tool are still working hard to improve it and to add new features.

Wine 1.7.35 is the most advanced version available

Users are usually advised to install the stable version of an app or operating system, but that might not be the best solution for Wine as well. The development branch is the one that integrates all the important changes that allow really new apps to work, so it's easy to understand why the stable iteration is not the most sought after version.

The changelog is not very extensive, but it does have few interesting entries. The devs have started to implement support for OpenGL core contexts, support for glyph placement in DirectWrite has been implemented, more WBEM objects are now available, and numerous other bug fixes have been implemented.

The list of supported games and apps now include Evernote 1.1, Spellforce, Angels Online, Evil Genius, Unity3D, EA Origin, Blood Bowl: Legendary Edition, Stranded II, Anno 2070, Firefox 35.0, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, Shadowgrounds, Dead Space 2, and Falco 6.

How to install the latest version of Wine in Ubuntu

Users can get Wine 1.7.35 from the source code, but Ubuntu users can install it from a PPA. Just enter these commands in a terminal (with root access):

code
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine
Enjoy!
