14 DAY TRIAL // The Snapchat on Windows Phone saga continues with a new episode, this time coming right from Redmond, as Microsoft removed absolutely all third-party clients from the store.
Yesterday, we reported to you that users running third-party Snapchat clients on their Windows Phones were getting their accounts blocked as part of the efforts made by the parent company to prevent further leaks from happening.
While there were indeed some rumors that Snapchat was working on an official client for Windows Phone, the whole case is getting even worse today because Microsoft decided to remove all third-party apps allowing users to access the service from the store.
Basically, at this point, those who own a Windows Phone have no option to access Snapchat, so their only hope is that an official client would arrive as soon as possible.
No official announcement until now
At the moment, there’s no official statement from Microsoft or Snapchat, so users can only speculate that the two companies indeed decided to remove third-party clients in order to stop banning more user accounts.
Looking at the big picture, this decision does make sense, especially because many users actually got their accounts blocked in the last few weeks, so allowing them to continue connecting to the service with third-party apps would have only made things worse.
We’ve already contacted Microsoft for some clarification on what happened with the third-party Snapchat apps and will update the article when we get an answer.
Snapchat is trying to prevent leaks
If you’re a long-time Snapchat user, you most likely know that earlier this year the service got hacked and thousands of pictures and videos were leaked online.
At that point, Snapchat said that a third-party client was at fault for the security breach, so since September this year, the parent company started banning users connecting to the service with anything else beside the official application.
Of course, this didn’t make much sense since third-party apps were still available in the stores of all supported mobile platforms, so it appears that the company eventually decided to remove these solutions entirely.
On Windows Phone, however, there’s no official Snapchat application, and despite rumors that such a client would arrive soon, both Microsoft and Snapchat remained completely tight-lipped on such a project until now.
All signs point to an imminent release of a Snapchat client for Windows Phone, so keep your fingers crossed during the holidays and with a little luck we could have it in the store in early 2015.
