14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft’s cloud-based storage service OneDrive comes by default with 15 GB of free storage space, after being upgraded from 7 GB, but Redmond has decided to give users the possibility of increasing the capacity available at no cost with a very handy option.
Starting today, consumers who configure their phones to automatically upload camera photos to OneDrive receive 15 GB of additional storage space, thus boosting the free capacity to 30 GB.
OneDrive has become a vital product for Microsoft’s long-term strategy, so the service is now integrated into Windows, Windows Phone, Outlook, Office 365 and others, with the software giant rolling out updates on a regular basis to keep pace with rivals from Google and Dropbox.
As far as Windows is concerned, OneDrive is available in Windows 8 in both the Modern UI and the desktop, with file uploads possible straight from Windows Explorer.
Available to Windows Phone, iOS, and Android users
Microsoft says that everyone can benefit from this storage increase, no matter the platform they use, as it’s available on Windows, Windows Phone, iOS and Android.
The only thing that users need to do is set up photo uploads to OneDrive and the free maximum storage limit should be automatically increased.
“Not an iPhone user? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. This also applies to anyone who already uses the OneDrive camera roll on Windows Phone (Windows Phone Store), Android (Google Play store) and Windows – you’ll see your storage go up as well. Same for any existing iPhone users who backup their photos to OneDrive,” the company said.
“When you are setting up your new phone with OneDrive, all your photos and videos will be available instantly without taking up precious space on your device. You can also can get more done with the combined power of OneDrive, Office Mobile, and OneNote.”
Limited-time offer
Even though it hasn’t provided too many details on this, Microsoft has said that this is a limited-time offer, which means that you might want to hurry setting up your phone to save photos to OneDrive.
As usual, additional plans are also available with a small fee in case you want even more space accessible from either OneDrive.com, Windows PCs, or mobile platforms.
An additional 100 GB of storage space can be added to your OneDrive account for $1.99 (1.5 euro) per month, while 200 GB are available for only $3.99 (2.8 euro).
