The vast majority of the Windows Phone smartphone market consists of Lumia smartphones made by either Nokia or Microsoft. Some of them already have access to Windows 10 for Phones Technical Preview and a lot more will be added to the list of supported devices in the next few weeks.

But what about those who own Huawei, HTC or brands other than Nokia and Microsoft? Since these are probably less than 5% of the Windows Phone smartphone market, Microsoft did not announce anything on the matter.

Given the fact that only several Lumia smartphones were compatible with Windows 10 for Phones Technical Preview, it makes sense that Microsoft should focus on bringing the new version of the operating system to more of its own handsets.

Today however, Microsoft's Gabriel Aul had a surprising answer for someone who asked about Windows 10 for Phone Technical Preview for non-Lumia smartphones.

According to him, Microsoft is working on bringing Windows 10 for Phones Technical Preview to more smartphones other than Lumia soon.

Unfortunately, he could not confirm a timeframe for the release of Windows 10 for these non-Lumia smartphone nor which ones will be the first to get it.

Could HTC One (M8) be the first non-Lumia device to get it?

HTC One (M8) is expected to be among the first to receive this major upgrade, but only if Microsoft doesn't stumble upon a specific device bug that might delay it.

It's unclear whether or not Microsoft plans to bring Windows 10 for Phones Technical Preview to native OEMs like Micromax, Allview, Prestigio, XOLO or BLU.

HTC 8X is another smartphone that could receive the highly-anticipated update in the next couple of months, since the device has already been upgraded to Windows Phone 8.1.

We'll be keeping an eye out for any additional details on the matter and we'll update the news, so stay tuned for more on this one.
