Work on Windows 10 advances at a really good pace, and it appears that Microsoft is so pleased with how things are going for the new operating system that it’s already making the necessary plans for a press event that’s expected to bring us the first Consumer Preview version.

Very little is known at this point, but The Verge writes that Microsoft wants to hold its very own event in late January in order to present the new Windows 10 Consumer Preview and describe the new features available to consumers.

Download links could be revealed soon after that, and depending on the date of this new event, users looking to give the new OS a try might have to wait until early February to get the public preview.

Windows Phone 10 also on the agenda

In addition to Windows 10 Consumer Preview, Windows Phone 10 is also very likely to get some love during the event, and the aforementioned source says that Microsoft could use the same press conference to talk about what’s to come for the smartphone operating system.

Again, details are very scarce right now, but this would really make sense, especially because Microsoft initially said that more information for consumers on Windows 10 would be provided in early 2015.

Windows 10 plans for phones, PCs, and tablets could thus get detailed during the event, but it appears that desktops and smartphones are very likely to steal the January show.

Full details by the end of the year

Whereas Microsoft remains completely tight-lipped on this event right now, the source says that full details about it should be disclosed by the end of the year. Invitations will be sent in early 2015, but since this is the first public unveiling of Windows 10, Microsoft will also stream the event online to make sure that all consumers get to know the operating system from its first appearance.

As far as features are concerned, the consumer preview version of Windows 10 will come with all improvements that are currently part of the Technical Preview, but also with new additions, including the Continuum interface that was announced in September. Continuum is specifically designed for 2-in-1s and allows users to switch from the desktop to the Modern UI in a second.

More on the Consumer Preview event will be disclosed in just a few weeks, and as we said earlier today, it’s pretty clear that 2015 is going to be really busy period for Microsoft and its users.
