The Lumia 640 is expected to arrive for $100 outright

MetroPCS is one of the many carriers in the United States that offer Windows Phone handsets. Although its portfolio isn't as big as that of AT&T or other major operators in the country, MetroPCS continues to support Windows Phone platform by adding a new handset to its offering once or twice per year.

After introducing the Lumia 521 and Lumia 635 last year, MetroPCS is now interested in adding the new Lumia 640 to its portfolio. According to WindowsCentral, the carrier will be launching the recently unveiled Windows Phone handset sometime in mid- or late-May.

The cost of the Lumia 640 hasn't been finalized yet, but we might be looking at a $100 outright price tag. MetroPCS will be releasing the LTE version of the smartphone, but we doubt that the device will offer dual-SIM as well seeing that US-based carriers are so reluctant to this feature.

It appears that the information has been confirmed by a MetroPCS employee, so we're still waiting for the carrier's confirmation, which will probably come later next month.

The Lumia 640 was officially unveiled earlier this month at Mobile World Congress 2015. Microsoft announced that the smartphone should go on sale globally beginning April, but MetroPCS will be offering the Lumia 640 a month later than its official release on the market.

It may be launched at other carriers as well

Other carries in the United States may add the Lumia 640 to their portfolios, but for now we don't have any confirmations or leaked info to sustain this speculation, so take it with a grain of salt.

Here is a quick recap of what the Lumia 640 has to offer in terms of specs. First of all, it comes with Windows Phone 8.1 out of the box and while it's Windows 10 ready, it's not yet compatible with Windows 10 Technical Preview.

The smartphone is equipped with a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory.

It also sports a 5-inch HD (720p) capacitive touchscreen display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 coating and Glance capability.

The Lumia 640 packs both LTE support and Wi-Fi. It features an 8-megapixel camera on the back, a 1-megapixel camera in the front and microSD card slot (up to 128GB).
