If you ever thought that you might want have an open source toothbrush, then the new Goodwell model might just be the one you are looking for.

Goodwell is also the name of the company building this strangely interesting toothbrush, but it's a small enterprise and they need money to fund their idea and the production. They are now in the middle of a new crowdfunding campaign on crowdsupply.com and they want to raise $12,500 (€10,000) to make it happen, which is actually a paltry sum.

This is not just an ordinary toothbrush. It's actually a kit that includes the actual toothbrush, a flosser, and tongue scrapper. They all work as attachments for a base that also incorporates a 3-axis accelerometer and onboard microcontroller. This is embedded technology at a completely different level.

Why would you ever want a toothbrush this weird?

One of the major selling points of this toothbrush is that it is guaranteed to last for the next 75 years, which basically makes it almost indestructible. The weird thing is that it's also eco-friendly and you can just bury it in the compost layer in a garden and nature will take care of the rest.

"The Goodwell data tracker has a 3 axis accelerometer and onboard microcontroller to capture your ( or your kids ) oral activities via our website or mobile app (coming spring 2015). We've made this device open source so our community can utilize and design their own programs and applications."

"It's made with Medical grade aluminum, polished bamboo composite, Charcoal bristles made from Binchotan - a fiber helps to deflect negative ions, has a powerful deodorizing effect, removes plaque and attacks the causes of bad breath. It also helps to prevent harmful bacteria and viruses from growing in the brush bristles," says the guys from Goodwell.

Just like any other crowdfunding project, there are several tiers, depending on just how much money you want to spend. Basically, you will want to get at least the "Premium Kit," which sells for $89 (€70), but includes the entire kit. You can also get just the toothbrush or you can get a better pack with more money. It's also worth mentioning that the CAD files from the design have been made public and anyone can design attachments for handle.

If you want to pledge money to this project or you want to find out more about it, just head to the crowdfunding website.
