Still built around the LXQt 0.8.0 desktop environment

Three days after the official announcement of Manjaro Linux 0.8.12, a point release that brings only a couple of changes, such as out-of-the-box support for Microsoft’s exFAT filesystem and Pacman 4.2 package manager, the Manjaro community released today the LXQt edition of the acclaimed Arch Linux-based computer operating system. At the moment of writing this article, only the 32-bit Live image was available for download, but that’s more than enough for us to take a quick screenshot tour of the release.

While no official changelog is available for Manjaro LXQt 0.8.12, the good news is that it includes all the changes implemented in the official Manjaro Linux distribution, as noted in the above paragraph. The bad news is that the release is still built around the LXQt 0.8.0 graphical desktop environment, offering various open-source applications like the Mozilla Firefox web browser, PCManFM file manager, Xfce’s Xarchiver archive manager utility, Leafpad text editor, LXDE’s LXImage image viewer, Baka-MPlayer video player, and Cantata music player.

The Lightweight Qt Desktop Environment 0.9.0 desktop environment is not included

The Lightweight Qt Desktop Environment (LXQt) 0.9.0 desktop environment was just announced yesterday, February 8, introducing a brand-new Frost theme, several new features, numerous internal updates, and user interface polishing. Most probably, the Manjaro Linux LXQt developers had no idea about the release of LXQt 0.9.0 and they didn’t packed it in the ISO images. Hopefully, users will be able to update their installations to LXQt 0.9.0 from the official software repositories later this week.

With a beautifully crafted dark theme and an astonishing wallpaper, the LXQt desktop of Manjaro Linux LXQt is fast, traditional and familiar at the same time. It consists of a single panel (taskbar) located on the bottom edge of the screen, from where users can access the Start Menu, launch applications, add and launch frequently used apps, interact with running programs, as well as essential system functions. This release is powered by Linux kernel 3.16.7, which is quite old, but patched with the latest security updates.

Users can download Manjaro Linux LXQt 0.8.12 right now from Softpedia. Live CD ISO images are available for both 32 and 64-bit systems. Keep in mind that this is a rolling-release operating system and you won’t have to download it if you already have a Manjaro Linux LXQt 0.8.x version installed, just updated it via Pacman.
