Still using the Cinnamon 2.4.6 desktop environment

Last time we looked at the Manjaro Linux Cinnamon computer operating system, about one month ago, when version 0.8.12 was made available for download, it was using a default Cinnamon theme with a mix of icons borrowed from the Ubuntu Linux distribution.

Since then, a first development version of Manjaro Linux Cinnamon 0.9.0 was released. While there’s no official announcement, we took the distribution for a test drive to see what’s new and to generate a nice screenshot tour for your viewing pleasure (see it at the end of the article).

We can report today that the new Manjaro Linux Cinnamon 0.9.0 Pre1 release brings a beautified Cinnamon desktop environment, which includes a brand-new theme and iconset, as well as a new wallpaper and various other small enhancements that make it look quite good.

The software selection has been cleaned since version 0.8.12

When we wrote the article about Manjaro Linux Cinnamon 0.8.12, which is now the current stable release of the distribution, we’ve mentioned that users can choose between different web browser and a wide selection of exotic software packages. Well, this is not the case anymore with Manjaro Linux Cinnamon 0.9.0.

The software selection has been cleaned a lot since version 0.8.12, and includes only the Mozilla Firefox web browser, Geary email client, HexChat IRC client, Pidgin instant messenger, Guayadeque music player, Gedit text editor, Disks disk utility, Viewnior image viewer, and VLC Media Player apps.

The distro is now powered by Linux kernel 3.19.1 and uses Cinnamon 2.4.6. You can download Manjaro Linux Cinnamon 0.9.0 Pre1 right now from Softpedia, but please keep in mind that it might not be stable enough to be deployed on production environments where stability is a must. Both 64 and 32-bit computer platforms are supported at this time.
