MSI jumps onboard with the new GPU standard

Back in March, gaming solution provider MSI rolled out the GS60 Ghost Pro notebook. The laptop, which was marketed as an Ultrabook, arrived with some impressive specifications like a 3K display (2880 x 1620 pixel resolution) and a high-end NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M discrete graphics card.

However, it appears MSI is looking to provide an important update for its flagship gaming machine. The MSI GS60-2QE Ghost Pro model has made an appearance with a bunch of retailers from Tunisia and the listings reveal some interesting details (as spotted at Notebook Italia).

The MSI GS60 Ghost Pro Gold Edition will be among the first to come with the new GPUs

As you might well know, NVIDIA just launched the GeForce GTX 980 and 970 graphic cards not so long ago. This is great news, especially since that means the first products taking advantage of the new GPUs should surface in no time.

We already talked about the ASUS ROG G751 which is expected to arrive soon with a brand new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M onboard, but it won’t be the only one.

MSI is looking to launch an overhaul of the Ghost Pro, which will add a brand new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M GPU onboard.

On top of that, MSI is throwing in some new paint on the laptop, so the upcoming model will be known as the Gold Edition.

The laptop will bring about the same 15.6-inch IPS display which offers 2880 x 1620 pixel resolution as the original model.

Under the hood lives an Intel Core i7-4710HQ processor clocked at 3.5GHz fitted with up to 16GB of RAM. As for internal storage, the new Ghost Pro should accommodate up to 2SSD of 256GB each in SuperRAID configuration plus a traditional hard drive of 1TB.

The novelty is the Maxwell-based GPU card, which should boost up overall gaming performance on the laptop.

MSI Ghost Pro Gold Edition is coming soon

All these premium features will make the MSI Ghost Pro Gold Edition laptop a pretty expensive machine, and if we are to believe the Tunisian listings, the notebook will arrive on the market with a €2,200 / $2,771 price tag.

In related news, we’re taking the opportunity to remind you that ASUS will also be launching a gaming machine taking advantage of the new Maxwell-based GPU.

ASUS will ship the G751 with la crème de la crème, which translates into the GeForce GTX 980M GPU. Other specifications include a 17.3-inch Super IPS display with HD resolution (MSI beats it here) and a choice between a quad-core Intel Core i7-4710HQ or i7-4860HQ fitted with up to 32GB of RAM.

We’re looking forward to see the first wave of laptops coming with the new Maxwell-based GPU architecture.
