The development team behind MKVToolNix, one of the best open-source and cross-platform software for manipulating MKV files under GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems, has announced the release of MKVToolNix 8.0.0.

Dubbed "Til The Day That I Die," MKVToolNix 8.0.0 is a major release that sets a new standard for MKV manipulation on all mainstream operating systems. The software suite includes both command-line and graphical utilities for splitting and joining Matroska (MKV) files, extracting audio and video streams, and much more.

The MKVToolNix GUI (Graphical User Interface) received most of the attention in this release, including better detection of the mkvmerge binary on Linux and OS X, improvements to the chapter editor and merge tool, job output and queue enhancements, and the addition of several new features to the merge tool and the Header & Chapter editor.

Moreover, MKVToolNix GUI sees the addition of a new option in Preferences that allows users to disable additional lossless compression for all track types, better display of pending jobs, the addition of new features to the watch jobs tool, support for maximizing several dialogs, support for selecting and copying the text of all message box dialogs, as well as countless bug fixes.

The mkvmerge received many improvements

In addition to the numerous new features implemented in the MKVToolNix GUI component, MKVToolNix 8.0.0 also brings dozens of improvements to the mkvmerge tool, such as better support for detecting codecs of MP2 audio streams from MPEG files, and a patch for a crash in the Base 64 decoder.

Last but not least, there's a fix for the key frame designation for video tracks in MP4 DASH files, MKVToolNix can now be successfully compiled under OpenBSD systems, and a crash related to certain types of invalid MKV files has been addressed in the mkvmerge, mkvextract, and mkvinfo tools.
