14 DAY TRIAL // Not so long ago we told you information emerged according to which the 2012-born Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update at some point in the future.
It’s odd that this is the case, because manufacturers usually don’t bother with devices that are almost two years and a half old. But the Galaxy Note 2 seems to have a special status.
On the other hand, the Galaxy S III won’t probably receive the same treatment. After all, it is a 3-year-old model, but if you still have one hanging around the house, the good news is that you can infuse it with some Lollipop if you want.
You’ll have to flash an unofficial ROM, however, but this is not a problem anymore for a device that old. The Paranoid Android 5 ROM is based on Android 5.0.2, which is what we see currently running on Google’s own Nexus batch.
Installing the ROM will bestow most of Lollipop features you’d expect, including lock-screen notifications, battery life and overall performance improvements. It also takes away TouchWiz and provides a pure Android experience.
However, there are negative aspects to consider. For example, we’re dealing with an unofficial ROM, so Paranoid Android doesn’t actually support this version.
If you do decide to go ahead with this, note that you will need to flash it with a custom kernel and your Galaxy S III will have to have an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery.
