Samsung recently launched its all-metal clad Galaxy A smartphone series in Cape Town in South Africa, and with this occasion the company dared fans to help it set a world record.

The Korean tech giant invited folks to take selfies with the Galaxy A5 and A3 in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most selfies taken in a single day (translate that into 24 hours).

Given the popular obsession with selfies, people were pretty receptive to Samsung’s plea, so more than 12,803 individuals got involved and snapped a self-portrait.

To make everything spicier, Samsung also gave away 100 Galaxy A smartphones and a lot of less exciting selfie sticks to encourage participation.

The Samsung Galaxy A series comes to replace the company’s previous Galaxy Alpha model, which was the first to arrive with a metal frame.

The two models are some of the thinnest devices Samsung has ever produced and come with mid-range specifications.

The A3 dons a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with qHD resolution while the A5 has a 5-inch Super AMOLED display with HD (720p) resolution.

Both models draw life from a 1.2GHz quad-core processor fitted with 2GB of RAM (1GB for the Galaxy A3) and 16GB of internal storage.

If you’re wondering, the selfie-camera used to achieve the world record is of a 5MP variety.
