The smaller device will be at the center of Huawei’s event

A while ago we told you that Huawei has been rumored to drop the “Ascend” moniker from its lineup of future products.

We can’t vouch this is what’s going to happen, but come MWC 2015 in early March we’ll be able to see what the case is. How so?

According to a recent report from HD Blog, Huawei is gearing up to introduce in Barcelona a new version of the Ascend Mate 7. The handset is only a few months old, so we’re not talking about a fully-fledged successor.

The company will reportedly be unveiling a smaller version of its flagship, which will arrive in the wild as the Mate 7 Compact.

The device will sport a 5.5-inch display which places it below the Ascend Mate 7 and the 6-inch display of the upcoming (Ascend) P8. This flagship is not expected to make a debut at MWC 2015, because Huawei reportedly has a separate press event scheduled for it in Q2 2015.

Apart from the form factor, we’re not given any info about specs, but this is as good a place as any to remind you the current Ascend Mate 7 lives off a HiSilicon Kirin 925 chipset and takes advantage of a 13MP camera under the hood.

You probably shouldn't expect QHD resolution onboard of the Mate 7 Compact, because in recent days Huawei’s CEO trolled companies like Meizu and Xiaomi for using “useless” 2K displays.
