Announced at MWC 2015, the BBM Protected feature was introduced as a solution for enterprise customers to exchange safe messages, while staying away from data security breaches in the process.

Even if BBM Protected has been available only for BlackBerry handsets so far, this week the Canadian company is extending the availability of the new feat to the Android and iOS environments.

The service will allow BBM Protected users to have secure chats with non-BlackBerry Protected employees working at different companies.

If you are a BBM Protected subscriber and you want to send a message to someone who doesn’t have the service, he/she will be required to download and install the free version of BBM on their iOS/Android/Blackberry phone.

In the aftermath of hacker attacks such as Freak, BlackBerry is now using encryption keys generated by the mobile devices themselves with the service. So BBM Protected is basically offering enterprise grade security, while retaining the best and most popular features of any consumer-friendly IM app.

BBM Protected is currently available for BES users, and as we told you above, it does require a subscription. However, BlackBerry is offering a 30-day free trial to get you started.

BlackBerry mentions in its official blog that cost per data breach for a firm has now exceeded $6 million, as reported by the Ponemon Institute. BlackBerry hopes to make enterprises more aware of the sort of vulnerabilities they are exposing themselves to and is now offering BBM Protected as a solution.
