It appears the ASUS ZenFone 2 won’t be a bargain

The ASUS ZenFone 2 was one of the best phones we saw getting introduced at CES 2015. The device was the first to go official with 4GB of RAM, and ASUS said the handset would go on sale with a $199 / €174 price tag (which we believed was for the 2GB of RAM variation).

Well, it seems the affordable price range originally announced was too good to be true. This week, the handset has already been made available for pre-order on AliExpress, so we can tell you how much you’ll need to take out of your pocket if you want a new ZenFone 2.

The 2GB model will ship out for $300 / €262 ($100 / €78 more than what we were expecting), while the 4GB version will cost you a hefty $440 / €384.

The big difference between the two variations (except for the RAM capacity) is that one runs on a quad-core Intel Atom processor clocked at 1.8GHz, while the other has a similar chip capable of working at 2.3GHz frequencies.

The handset also popped up for pre-order on Clover UK and Orange South Africa, but no pricing has been revealed yet. As for ASUS, their Twitter page still says the ZenFone will sell for $199 / €174, so maybe, just maybe, there is still hope.
