Apple today launched a Tumblr blog using a custom-branded iTunes theme featuring the best of 2014 in categories like Music, Movies, TV, and Books. Apps are notably absent from the featured content, as are other products housed by the iTunes Store.

In an effort to expand its presence on social media, Apple has opened a Tumblr blog for the company’s iTunes business. The blog features imagery from popular content sold on iTunes, including animated GIFs.

Existing Tumblr users can reblog the banners on their own domains, add them as favorites, and share on Facebook and Twitter. Much of the content is labeled as Best of 2014, as part of Apple’s annual campaign that promotes the who’s who in Music, Movies, TV, and Books. The blog also links to the iTunes accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Hitting the button labeled as Best of 2014 iTunes in the middle of the home page opens a video that promotes much of the featured content, plus apps. The purpose of the iTunes Tumblr blog isn’t well understood, but it’s clearly an effort on behalf of Apple to reach into more social media. What’s clear is that Tumblr is likely to gain quite a few more subscribers as a result of the company’s move.

Visit the blog and check it out with your own eyes.
